Dive Brief:
- Novant Health has closed its purchase of UCI Medical Affiliates, a firm that manages urgent care and physical therapy facilities, from insurer BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based health system said Monday.
- The deal, first announced this summer, includes 52 urgent care facilities and 20 physical therapy clinics located across South Carolina. A Novant spokesperson declined to comment on the purchase terms.
- The clinics are staffed by nearly 200 physicians and advanced practice providers, according to a press release. All workers will join Novant under the deal, according to the spokesperson.
Dive Insight:
The latest deal comes as Novant has been strategically expanding in South Carolina. Earlier this year, the system acquired East Cooper Medical Center, Hilton Head Hospital, Coastal Carolina Hospital and their affiliated physician practices from Tenet Healthcare for about $2.4 billion.
The system also plans to build a new hospital campus in Bluffton, South Carolina, Novant said in late September.
Novant’s purchase of the urgent care and physical therapy clinics will complement services offered at its three hospitals in South Carolina, as well as a clinic operated in collaboration with Ochsner Health geared toward seniors, the health system said.
“Novant Health’s provider network will now extend to dozens of new communities across the Palmetto State, representing our long-term investment in the health of South Carolinians,” Dean Swindle, Novant’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer and president of Novant Health Enterprises, said in a statement on the deal.
During the first six months of the year, Novant reported $318 million in excess revenues over expenses, compared with $122 million during the same period last year.
